How Many Degrees Can Golf Clubs Be Bent?

Proper Technique For Bending Golf Club Angles

BENDING BAR POSITION

Irons
Place adjustable hosel bending bar as LOW as possible on the hosel so the bending will be below the bottom of the hosel bore.

Woods

Place adjustable hosel bending bar as HIGH as possible on the hosel so the bending will be above the crown of the club head. Be careful to keep the bar from damaging the ferrule.

Putters With Hosels
Place adjustable hosel bending bar as HIGH as possible on the hosel. The bending bar can be affixed to the round shaft portion if long enough or just below on the flat part of the hosel neck. Bend HIGH above any weld position where the hosel is attached to the head.

No Hosel Putters
Place putter shaft bending bar with the top shaft post of the bending bar on one side of the putter shaft and the bottom shaft post on the opposite side of the shaft. The upper shaft bend should be centered between the two shaft posts of the putter shaft bending bar.

BENDING TECHNIQUES

Short Quick Jolts
This technique is ideal for bending cast irons and metal woods. First put some firm pressure against the hosel by lifting up or pulling down the bending bar. This reduces the torque and seats the benidng bar. When short quick jolts (or bumps) are applied the hosel will bend and become fatigued in its new position. This method allows the user to feel the hosel bend. It also reduces the risk of breakage.

Constant Pressure
This technique is ideal for bending forged irons and most putters. Once you apply pressure to the hosel continue the bend until you reach the desired degrees. It is difficult to feel how much the hosel bends so be careful not to over bend and damage the hosel or crack the chrome plating on forged irons. Putters with long hosels require a lot of bending to reach the desired degrees.

Bending on Plane

Lie Angle
When bending the lie angle place the bending bar under the hosel and align it with the shaft. Then bend in a plane parallel to the front of the bending machine.

Loft Angle
When bending the loft angle place the bending bar in front of the hosel and align it with the shaft. Then bend in a plane parallel to the side of the bending machine.

Heating Hosel
It is not recommended to use heat on hosels for bending angles. Cast golf clubs are bendable if they have been heat treated properly.

It requires intense heat to make a golf club hosel more malleable. The shaft epoxy bond will fail and the head will be discolored. Heating the hosel red-hot is a form of heat treatment and if the head is cooled by quenching it in water the hosel will become more brittle and subject to breaking when bent.
